Sourdough bread with apple and bell pepper, from The Artisan Bakers in Barnoldswick. Together with kalamata olives, balsamic vinegar and olive oil dips, I serve bread as people are gathering at the table, sorting drinks and getting comfortable. It’s a nice relaxed start to the meal. This freshly baked loaf – collected from the bakery on the way to the holiday cottage – certainly went down well yesterday as a prelude to the melon and ham starter.
