Cherry blossom in my kitchen garden. I maintain an organic garden and buy fruit, vegetables and herbs from organic farmers, growers and markets in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Manchester and beyond. One teaspoon of the neonicotinoid pesticide ‘Cruiser SB’ – recently used on British sugar beet in East Anglia – is enough to kill 1.25 billion honeybees. Pesticides can stay in the soil for years, and they taint any flowering plant which grows, meaning that bees foraging for nectar from a flower can be poisoned years after treated seeds were planted. Not something I’d want to support in my local area. I worked for The Wildlife Trusts around 13 years ago and have supported Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s local ‘Wild Ingleborough’ upland nature restoration project for several years.
